The tradition of elaborate wedding cakes spawned from many cultures. In medieval England, cakes were stacked as high as possible so that the bride and groom may kiss over them.
If the bride and groom successfully kissed over the stacks of cakes, then it was believed they'd live happily ever after together. However, in Ancient Rome, bread was broken over the bride's head to bring good fortune. In the mid 17th century, "bride's pies" became quite popular. A ring would be baked inside of the pie and whoever would discover it in their slice would be the next to get married. These bride's pies would eventually evolve into bride's cakes.
Contemporary wedding cakes as we know them originate with Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany 1882, whose wedding cake was the first to be entirely edible and was made up of tiers of cakes.
