The new year is the perfect time to catch up on those DIY projects we were too busy to dive into last year.
Whether it's finding new DIY ways to reorganize my closet or brushing up on some winter-inspired nail art, I'm definitely making it a resolution to practice my crafting skills more.
So when I stumbled upon this impressive DIY necklace with a hidden secret, I just had to figure out how to make one for myself.
Imgur user kelthazar was on a mission to create a totally unique piece of jewelry — and absolutely succeeded. This gorgeous "magician's locket" is more than a simple wooden necklace: It literally changes shape with a simple flick of the wrist.
Turn it to the left and the pendant transforms into a heart. Move it to the right and the necklace flowers into a stunning peacock-shape. With just a few pieces of wood, and a ton of imagination, this brilliant DIYer was able to create a surprising and beautiful piece of jewelry.

Our DIYer started by using some basswood from the local craft store. They then hand-cut the initial rectangular design, using a clamp to steady the wood.
Since they only needed half the thickness, they cut the piece in two, and then sanded the edges.
Afterwards, they took the dual pieces and cut them diagonally, taking pains to keep the lines as straight as possible.
Our DIYer's next task was incorporating a small-sized dowel into the mix. After cutting down a store-bought one, they used sand paper and a clamp to further refine the piece.
They placed the dowel in between the pair of rectangles, drilling a space so that all the pieces fit snugly together.
Our craftsperson highly recommends using an X-Acto knife when working with the tiny and delicate pendant pieces.
The locket was then fashioned together, stained and painted — making sure all the pieces were properly glued into place.
And here's when the magic happens! With a twist of the locket, it will transform into something completely different.
The simple pendant flips into a beautiful heart. Our DIYer also chose a design that would look natural in any position.
But that's not all — this necklace has one last surprise…
With one more twist, the heart opens up into a four-leaf-clover shape!
Our Imgur user shares the secret: "The top face rotates 360 degrees and then closes back up."
They added a chain to the center of the piece — and the necklace was ready to be worn.
Our craftsperson shared this final helpful hint: "I used tiny magnets for the center of the cut of the locket, to give it added hold and that nice 'click' when they're in place."
This gorgeous DIY project is a fun (and magical) way to create a truly one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry.
