Retired American gymnast Dominique Moceanu grew up without knowing that she had a biological sister. But, in December 2007 that all changed.
When she was 26, Moceanu received a letter from a woman named Jennifer Bricker who said she was her long-lost sister. She included adoption papers and photographs, which showed a surprising resemblance to Moceanu’s younger sister.
“I couldn’t believe that I didn’t know. How do I not know when I was 6 years old?” the Olympic medal–winning gymnast says in the OWN video below.
In 1987, Bricker’s biological parents gave her up for adoption after she was born without legs. Luckily, she grew up with three brothers and parents who never let her say the word “can’t.” Bricker went on to become an acrobat and aerialist and even went on tour with pop star Britney Spears.
“It’s so ironic when you put both of our lives together. I was the prodigy, I was supposed to have this wonderful life and all of this great stuff happen, and I had a lot of challenges, ” Moceanu says. “And it seemed like the girl born without legs should have all these challenges and yet she was so free-spirited and had an awesome childhood.”
Although Moceanu was angry with her father, she reconciled with him before his death in 2008, as shown at the emotional two-minute mark.
