Rene Compean, 46, was hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains in Southern California when he texted a photo to his friend. The picture showed his dirty, soot-covered legs hanging over a canyon.
The hiker was in a panic and in desperate need of help; he had gotten lost and his phone battery was dying. To make matters worse, the "location" feature on his phone was off, and the temperatures outside were dipping dangerously low.
Rene was somewhere out there, deep in the mountains of California, but he had no clue where.
His friend called 911 to report him missing and gave police the photo that Rene had sent him earlier, showing his feet dangling over the cliff.
That single photo was then posted to social media. It was a long shot, but authorities asked the public if anyone could help them figure out where Rene was located.
Watch the video below to see how one eagle-eyed stranger was able to help rescue Rene.
