Nancy Pelosi received an email from interim speaker Rep. Patrick McHenry saying she needs to leave her office in the Capitol building. McHenry was named acting House speaker on Tuesday, October 3, the day Kevin McCarthy was removed. Emailing former House Speaker Pelosi and telling her to leave her office is one of the first things McHenry has done since being named interim speaker, sending an email to her just a few hours after. “Please vacate the space tomorrow, the room will be re-keyed," said the email sent from McHenry's office to Pelosi's office, according to Politico.
The email, which was sent on Tuesday evening, said the room would be reassigned "for speaker office use." Pelosi said she doesn't care about the office space, but she feels like McHenry has better things to do.
“Office space doesn’t matter to me, but it seems to be important to them. Now that the new Republican Leadership has settled this important matter, let’s hope they get to work on what’s truly important for the American people," Pelosi said.

Pelosi was House speaker from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. The reason she still had this office was due to her history as a House speaker, BBC reported. Pelosi called the move a “sharp departure from tradition," pointing out that it is very different from what she did when she was in the position that McHenry is in now.
“As Speaker, I gave former Speaker [Dennis] Hastert a significantly larger suite of offices for as long as he wished," she elaborated. Other than the fact that this sudden eviction is not the norm, she was not impressed by McHenry’s priorities.
“With all of the important decisions that the new Republican Leadership must address, which we are all eagerly awaiting, one of the first actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to immediately vacate my office in the Capitol,” Pelosi said.
McHenry didn't give Pelosi much time to move out of her office, and Pelosi was not even there at the time. “Sadly, because I am in California to mourn the loss of and pay tribute to my dear friend Dianne Feinstein, I am unable to retrieve my belongings at this time,” Pelosi explained.
California Sen. Dianne Feinstein died on September 29, 2023. Pelosi was in California for the memorial services. The funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, October 5, according to CNN.
Politico reported that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ staff assisted Pelosi with packing up and moving her stuff while she was away.
Because Pelosi was in San Francisco at the time, she was not present to vote on removing Kevin McCarthy. “Sadly, Speaker Pelosi is grieving the loss of her dear friend Dianne Feinstein and will remain in San Francisco for the next few days to participate in official memorials and pay tribute to Senator Feinstein’s towering legacy," her spokesperson Aaron Bennett said.
