Katy Perry’s Mom Is Running For Local Office In Santa Barbara As A Republican

Katy Perry's mom is reportedly running for office, with the hopes that her involvement in conservative politics will "get the conservatives in there to make a difference." She is running for a seat on her local Republican Party's central committee in Santa Barbara, California, according to People, and now qualifies to appear on the ballot in March.

Katy's mom, Mary Hudson, 75, is a Pentecostal pastor, according to People, and in her Instagram bio, she says that she is "Wife to Keith, mother to Angela, Katy and David" and an "author" and "speaker."

Members of the central committee typically work to promote their party and local candidates in the community, and Mary has described current members of Santa Barbara's Republican central committee as "lackadaisical," according to the Daily Mail.

Katy and her mom don't necessarily see eye to eye when it comes to politics. In a speech at Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential election night party, Katy shared that her parents voted for Donald Trump.

“Tonight my parents voted for Trump," Katy said at the time, according to Time magazine. "But you know what? We will still all be sitting at the same table for Thanksgiving. And this is the moment we need to remember: that we all love our parents, and we all love our children.”

Her speech was a call for unity and setting differences aside. "Remember, today is not just a finish line. It also marks the beginning of all the work we must come together to do," Katy said at the time. “We need everyone — gay, straight, black, white, brown, spray-tanned, people of faith and people that just love."

While it seems like Katy and her mom have been able to set their differences aside and maintain a good relationship, Mary wasn't always supportive of Katy's way of life.

After Katy released "I Kissed a Girl," Mary wasn't exactly quiet about her opinions. "I felt like I was flattened to the wall," she said at the time, according to the Daily Mail. "People ask us, 'How could you have a daughter like that?'"

In 2011, Katy told Vanity Fair that she comes "from a very non-accepting family, but I’m very accepting."

She also told the publication that her parents were very strict when she was growing up, so she didn't have a traditional childhood. Her mom only read the Bible to her, banned her from saying "deviled eggs," and stopped her from listening to secular music, according to Vanity Fair.

But Mary appears to be a proud mom now, based on the photos she shares on social media. "Katy’s last night of her 2 year residency at Resorts World Las Vegas ," she captioned one photo that she shared on Instagram in November.
