Lawyer Spends Half A Million Dollars To Buy Backpacks For Elementary School Students

Students in Detroit, Michigan showed up to school expecting an ordinary day. Little did they know one man was going to change their entire school year in an instant.

Most students in Detroit cannot afford the supplies, or even a backpack, necessary to complete everyday school work. This often leads to feelings of inferiority from the students who don't have access to what other's do.

When confidence is low, so is performance. Enter Mike Morse, a lawyer with an enormous heart. His firm, The Mike Morse Law Firm, invested half a million dollars to buy 23,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for grades K through 5.

Sometimes help comes from places we least expect it, Scott Budnick quit his job as a famous Hollywood producer to help educate prison inmates.

The backpacks were given to 65 Detroit schools.  “I think it teaches them that there are people out there in the community that care about them,” Mike said. “They want them to succeed, that want them to win at life.”

A family who was apprehensive about moving to Detroit, in financial need, truly appreciated Mike's gesture.

“As a result of the donation, they now have all the supplies they need to start the year. The entire family of 5 was incredibly grateful and it was really moving,” said filmmaker Sean O’Grady. “They heard nothing but bad things about Detroit before moving there, but this helped them realize that there are generous people everywhere.”

Mike hopes to continue supporting Detroit schools next year.
