Sons are often protective of their mothers. It's natural for them to want to take care of and look out for mom, especially when she's on her own.
One such son recently appeared on Dr. Phil in distress over his mother. For two years, Nancy has been communicating online with a man named Shaun, whom she is convinced is her soul mate. She explains that Shaun is stuck in Dubai because he doesn't have $20,000 to pay the government there in taxes, a requirement for his return.
Darcy, Nancy's adult son, and his wife, Lindsey, have tried to express their concerns she's being scammed. She has sent money, gift cards, and more to Shaun, with nothing in return. She's never seen him in a live video feed. She's never heard his voice. Yet she's willing to do anything for him, even to the detriment of her relationships with the rest of her family.
The disagreements between Darcy and Nancy over Shaun became so involved that Darcy asked his mother to choose between her relationship with him and her relationship with Shaun. Darcy and Lindsey had no choice but to cut her off when they learned she chose Shaun.
In a final desperate attempt to get through to Nancy, Darcy created a shadow account of Shaun's account. Not only did his mother not detect the one letter difference between that account and the account she's been speaking to for the past two years, but she even sent him an Apple gift card at his request, none the wiser that the person she was talking to wasn't the same person she's been talking to.
This might seem like the moment where Nancy finally sees the light, but it's not the case. Instead, she acknowledges that you can be scammed "by bad people," insinuating Darcy is the bad person in this situation. Despite even more evidence from Dr. Phil, she continues to believe Shaun is the real deal.
