Dedicated Father Wants To Stop Unfair Stereotypes About Black Fathers

There are stereotypes that hover over African-American fathers, ones that Matt Prestbury wants to change.

“There are many things about fatherhood that are universal but there are also things that are different just from the standpoint of being black and from some of the stereotypes and myths about us,” he says.

Federal statistics from 2013 show that black fathers who live with their children are very much a part of their lives — and in some areas, on a greater level than fathers of other races. Some strong relationships between African-American fathers and their children have also been shown in the media, most recently with NBA star Stephen Curry. Yet, the belief that they are absent lingers.

In turn, Prestbury started a Facebook group called Black Fathers, which has become a place for these men to communicate with each other. It has more than 16,000 members.

“A group such as Black Fathers is providing opportunity to change the narrative that black fathers don’t exist,” he says.

In the clip, Prestbury’s strong relationship with his children is clearly understood. Not only has he taught them great habits — like making their bed each morning — he also makes sure to eat breakfast with them before school.

“When I hear folks in society question where are black fathers, I say loudly wherever I am, I say, ‘I’m right here!’” he says.
