It’s always thrilling to capture rare moments of animals on camera. We are used to seeing deer shed their antlers, but seeing a moose shed its antlers? That’s a sight to see!
ABC7 News Storyful shared a story about a Canadian wildlife enthusiast experiencing what he claimed was a “once-in-a-lifetime moment.” Derek Keith Burgoyne was filming a moose with his drone in a snowy forest in New Brunswick, Canada, when the moose shed both of its antlers.
Derek said that he was in the Plaster Rock community of Victoria County on January 12 when he discovered three bull moose. Two of them already shed their antlers, but the other one had yet to do so. Using his drone camera, Derek followed the moose's movement. Suddenly the moose stopped walking, shook its body, and dropped both antlers into the snow.
In the video, after showing the drone footage, Derek uses a handheld camera and turns it towards himself to capture his adventure of following the moose tracks to retrieve the antlers.
Derek says, “This is the second time this has happened! Once was he just shook one side on record.” He then turns the camera around to show himself following the tracks to the antlers. As you hear Derek crunch through the snow, he narrates what he is doing.
We then see Derek come upon the beautiful sets of antlers. He sets his camera up to film his process of picking them up. The antlers look a lot bigger when Derek has them in his hands. You don’t really think about how big moose are until you see one in person or hold their antlers in your hands. Derek then counts the points on the antlers, which total 17.
Derek tells Storyful, “I consider this winning the lottery when it comes to filming wildlife. A bull can shed one antler and carry the other side for days or even weeks. So, to capture both antlers shedding at the exact same time is extremely rare! Once-in-a-lifetime moment!”
