If you've been dating someone for just a week or so, then yes — it makes sense to break up with them through text message. It might not be your classiest move in life. But if you're unsure how to respond, or just barely know them enough to warrant meeting in person, it may be your best bet. But having a relationship that ended through text is almost unheard of if you're married — even if the marriage lasted less than two weeks.
It's safe to say that the rules are a little different in Hollywood. You may have heard that Pamela Anderson's most recent marriage lasted only 12 days, but supposedly it ended through text. Pamela married 74-year-old film producer Jon Peters. The ceremony happened on January 20 and was kept a secret from most. Some sources claim that the marriage wasn't official, which makes things slightly easier for the couple.
According to Page Six, Jon and Pamela had a long friendship prior to the wedding. Jon apparently has always had a thing for Pamela and was willing to move as quickly as she wanted. As you may remember, Pamela famously married Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee just 96 hours after meeting him. Miraculously, that coupling ended up lasting three years.
So who is Jon, really? According to TooFab, the two met for the first time back in the 1980s at the Playboy Mansion. After getting married in January 2020, Pamela spent a few days away from her husband. You'd assume that that's why the text message happened — but still, a phone call would have been a little more personal.
"This whole marriage thing… has scared me," the text from Jon read, according to Us Weekly. "It made me realize that at 74 I need a simple quiet life and not an international love affair. Therefore, I think the best thing we can do is that I'm going to go away for a couple of days." From what it seems, the media attention likely got to him.

"The world knows we did it and I think now we need to go our own separate ways," he continued. "I hope that you can forgive me." Us Weekly reports that in the short days of their marriage, the two were only physically together for four and a half days. It makes a lot of sense for Jon to overthink what just happened, especially since the decision to marry happened so quickly.
But that doesn't mean that this doesn't hurt for Pamela. This is actually her fifth failed marriage — well, technically. Aside from Tommy Lee, she's also been married to Kid Rock and poker player Rick Salomon — the latter failed twice. Most of her marriages have ended very quickly.
There were also some engagements that were never made official. For one, she was reportedly engaged to model Marcus Schenkenberg. "Marcus is a really nice man but I'm just looking for something different in my life – someone with a little passion in their life," she said in a 2001 press release, courtesy of Cinema.com.
Oddly enough, in that same story, it was Jon Peters who was rumored to have caused the split. Pamela was caught kissing him around that time. However, she denied that he was the reason. "There is no one else involved and certainly not Jon," she reportedly stated. "That was all nonsense. Marcus and I had both been working hard and it was simply impossible for us to be together. Jon is an old friend."
It's possible the two may still try to be friends. Pamela released a statement to Fox News, saying, "I have been moved by the warm reception to Jon and my union. We would be very grateful for your support as we take some time apart to reevaluate what we want from life and from one another." So perhaps they haven't actually broken up.
"Life is a journey and love is a process," her statement continued. "With that universal truth in mind, we have mutually decided to put off the formalization of our marriage certificate and put our faith in the process." In all honesty, this might have been a lot less painful had that text not leaked.
Here's the good news. It seems like Jon is genuinely infatuated with Pamela. He actually spoke directly to The Hollywood Reporter, getting an article byline in a piece regarding how the two met. As mentioned earlier, it was at the Playboy Mansion. Pamela was just 19 at the time.
"I walked in and saw this little angel sitting at the bar," he said. "It was Pammy. She was like 19. I knew she would be a big star. We ended up living together. Of course, Hefner loved her and saw her beauty. Pamela was a girl who with no makeup was gorgeous." That said, Jon wasn't all that thrilled over her being at the mansion.
"She was very smart and very talented," he continued. "I tried to talk her out of doing Playboy. I said, 'Don’t do Playboy. Focus on a serious career.' She said, 'You’re nuts.' She wanted to do Playboy, and she went on to do 13 covers." At least she knew what she wanted career-wise, which is respectful.
"Pamela was amazingly ambitious, knew what she wanted to do, how she wanted to do it," Jon gushed. "She was like the early Kardashians. She’s very smart. She raised two kids on her own." He later mentioned that he was at Pamela's side whenever her relationship with Tommy Lee became tumultuous.
A source told Hollywood Life that marrying Pamela was literally Jon's dream come true. "Jon has always wanted to marry her," the source said. "He really has been in love with her all these years, so it’s quite the fairytale and exactly what she needs after so many disastrous relationships."
That said, Jon's message seemed sincere. Even though he shouldn't have sent it through text, it seems as if this is something he truly wants to work on. And let this be a lesson in general. Even if you're truly in love with someone, you should think about all of the small details before getting married. Sometimes it works out, but other times the reality of the situation quickly becomes overwhelming.
