In the digital age, our smartphones have become a tool for self-expression and connection. However, for 28-year-old Michaela Witter, a trip to her local Barnes & Noble in California turned into a distressing ordeal when she found herself being followed. I’m not one to film myself when I’m out and about in stores, but after hearing this story, I’m definitely going to start.
On an ordinary day at Barnes & Noble, Michaela was doing something that millions of people do every day: filming herself. Little did she know that this seemingly mundane act would turn into a harrowing experience. As she captured moments of her visit to the bookstore, she soon became aware that she was being followed by a man who appeared to have ulterior motives.
In the video that Michaela captured, you can see this man who was identified as Caleese Crowder, behind her at all times. His behavior escalated as he crouched down, slid toward her, and appeared to engage in an invasive and deeply inappropriate act – sniffing her.
Taking matters into her own hands, Michaela courageously confronted Crowder while continuing to film the incident, ensuring that the evidence was documented. In the video you see Michaela turn around and ask Crowder “What are you doing?” Without hesitation, he replies with, “Tying my shoe. What are you doing?” Michaela explained to Inside Edition that Crowder was clearly not tying his shoe because his shoe was already tied.
Michaela then captured Crowder doing the exact same thing to another woman in the store. After her encounter, Michaela posted her video on TikTok to share her experience. She shared her video in the hope that it would raise awareness and potentially help identify the man who had caused her distress. Little did she know that her post would strike a chord with others.

Shockingly, several individuals recognized Crowder from Michaela’s video and shared their own stories of him allegedly engaging in similar behavior. The outpouring of support and recognition from social media users eventually caught the attention of law enforcement.
Caleese Crowder was arrested on suspicion of peeping and prowling, facing legal consequences for his alleged actions.
