Preemie Babies Can Be Saved By Wearing Special Sock With Monitor Inside It

A baby is considered premature if they are born before the 37-week pregnancy mark.

According to the CDC, 1 in 10 babies are born premature. This is the leading cause of infant death, particularly in babies born preterm, which is before 32 weeks.

Owlet Baby Care is best known for their top of the line baby monitors. The company has created a baby monitor that is specific to premature babies to prevent infant death.

The Owlet Smart Sock monitors a baby's vitals, like heart rate and oxygen levels, to give a parent a sense of ease while their baby is sleeping. To test their product, they logged over 100,000 hours and monitored 100 billion heartbeats.

The sock, which comfortably fits over an infant's foot, uses hospital technology called pulse oximetry. The monitor reports back to a base station, which sends the information directly to an app on the parent's phone that they can check at any time to make sure everything is okay.

26 babies have already set off the alarm in the Owlet Smart Sock in situations where their lives were threatened. All 26 babies are alive and well today. You can see the innovative technology in the video below!
