Savanna LeBron got used to being nominated for the homecoming court. Except this year, she realized there was something a little bit disturbing about the tradition at St. Martin High School.
Students nominate girls to the court, but then the football team chooses the queen. The girls wear skin tight dresses, a ton of makeup, and the boys rate them on their looks.
"We're put on display for the audience; that's how it's objectifying us," LeBron said. "Who's the most pretty; who's the most gorgeous; who's the most likable girl."
LeBron thinks it's strange that only girls are required to face such judgement, and the ones who aren't nominated ultimately end up feeling "ugly" and not valued.
"It subsequently puts down the girls who aren't elected onto the court — who aren't the popular girls, you know?" she said. "I think one resolution is to have a gender neutral court instead of one that is exclusive only to girls."
LeBron plans on wearing a plain white dress that isn't formfitting in protest of the tradition. She's not going to wear any makeup and, even though she knows she'll get made fun of, she doesn't care.
"I'm giving my ego a restraining order for the night, because I think that this is more important than how people are going to talk about me," she said.
