Anderson Cooper Asked Prince Harry Why He Keeps Airing Grievances After Leaving Royalty

Prince Harry is continuing to speak out about what happened leading up to his exit from the royal family.

This time, he sat down with CNN’s Anderson Cooper to talk about his upcoming memoir, Spare. The full 60 Minutes interview won’t be out until Sunday, but CBS released a clip wherein Anderson asks Harry why he and Meghan continued to air their grievances after leaving the royal family.

This is Harry’s first US television interview to promote his book, which will recount his childhood, the loss of his mother, and his young adult life in the royal family.

It’s the latest in many of the ways Harry has recently sought to set the record straight about his departure from his family.

In the interview, the second son of King Charles reiterated once again that he tried to address matters privately with his family. He said that’s when he started noticing a pattern about press releases.

“And every single time I tried to do it privately there have been briefings and leakings and planting of stories against me and my wife,” he said.

“You know, the family motto is ‘Never complain, never explain,’” he prompted.

“It’s just a motto,” he said.

Cooper clarified what Harry meant by this.

“There’s a lot of complaining and a lot of explaining … being done through leaks,” he said, to which Harry nodded.

“Through leaks,” Harry confirmed.

Harry went on to explain how the system works: Someone presumably from the palace will have a conversation with the press and give them an exclusive story.

“They will feed or have a conversation with the correspondent," Harry explained. "And that correspondent will literally be spoon-fed information and write the story. And at the bottom of it they will say that they've reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment," he said.

"But the whole story is Buckingham Palace commenting,” he added.

He additionally detailed how he and Meghan were treated differently than other members of the family.

“So when we're being told for the last six years, 'We can't put a statement out to protect you.' But you do it for other members of the family. It becomes — there becomes a point when silence is betrayal,” he said in the 60 Minutes preview.
