There are some animals out there who are so caring and selfless that you might find yourself completely overwhelmed by how far they might go to care for another creature that is in distress.
This Instagram Reel shares the incredible story of how a rescue dog essentially helped save an injured hummingbird and how the pair quickly became fast friends who went on to live in the same home together.
Rex is a beautiful dog who has experienced a tough life — he lived his early years as a stray on the streets. Before he was adopted, Rex used to attack cats and even got into fights with other dogs.
A month after his adoption, Rex’s softer side came out in the most unexpected way. While out for a walk in California with his new parent, Ed Gernon, Rex noticed a hummingbird on the ground that was covered in ants.
Ed was convinced that the hummingbird was already dead, but it was Rex who refused to leave the bird. Ed decided to bring the injured hummingbird back to his home and over the next several weeks, he was able to nurse the bird back to health by feeding her a sugar formula on a strict schedule.
Ed even taught the bird how to fly again by using a hair dryer.

A year later, Hummer is happily living in Ed’s home alongside Rex and the two have become the best of friends. Hummer drinks and bathes in Rex’s water dish and Ed notes that he’s convinced that Hummer has developed a “total crush” on his adopted dog.
