People were stunned when a 17-year-old boy who'd been presumed dead by parents and relatives awoke in his casket on the way to his own funeral.
Kumar Marewad was bitten by a stray dog about a month ago in India. The bite caused a viral infection, leading Kumar to come down with a high fever.
His condition continued to worsen at the hospital and was put on a ventilator. He was eventually taken off life support. Doctors told Kumar's family he would not survive.
“We had decided to take Kumar home after doctors told us his chances of survival were bleak once taken off the ventilator,” said Kumar’s brother-in-law, Sharanappa Naikar.
The family brought him home. Soon after, they were certain he had died. They made funeral arrangements for him. As they escorted his body to the service, Kumar suddenly awoke.
He opened his eyes, wiggled his hands and legs, and began to breathe fast. Kumar was taken to the hospital and put back on a ventilator.
“We suspect he suffers from meningoencephalitis, an infection caused due to dog bites,” said his doctor, Mahesh Neelakhantannavar.
Kumar is still recovering in the hospital. Meanwhile, his family is seeking support from their community to continue his treatments.
