Things were supposed to get less hectic for Caroline and her 12-year-old daughter, Heather, after they made it through a particularly difficult period in which Caroline and Heather’s father got divorced. The pair had recently settled into a new neighborhood as Caroline had received a job promotion in pharmaceuticals that required them to relocate.
A new start excited Caroline as it meant a step up in her career, but young Heather felt sad about leaving all of her friendships behind. After the move, Caroline noticed that her daughter had become withdrawn and spent most of her time alone.
Caroline began to feel even more concerned for her daughter when she noticed her perpetually staring at the trash cans that sat outside of their house and along their street. Caroline got an eerie feeling like Heather was almost trying to decipher some kind of hidden message from within them.
One day, Caroline decided to follow her daughter on the walk to school to see if she could observe something that might help her understand what was going on with Heather. As they walked at a distance down the suburban street, Caroline saw her daughter meet up with another girl named Lily who was carrying a large bag.
Caroline was within earshot and heard the girls discussing the nearby garbage cans. She heard them discuss the various sizes and how to keep them clean. Caroline was completely perplexed by their conversation.
