8-Day-Old Conjoined Twins Become The Youngest Ever To Be Successfully Separated

Maya, Lydia, and Camilla were born two entire months early this past December. Babies born that young are already at a higher risk and need extra care, but Maya and Lydia had an even slimmer chance of survival.

While Camilla was born healthy, Maya and Lydia were conjoined at the chest as well as at the liver. One little one didn't have enough blood, while the other had too much, and her blood pressure was dangerously high.

Luckily, doctors at the hospital in Switzerland were ready for the challenge. They assembled a skilled team of surgeons and nurses, whose combined knowledge would be best suited to getting these two baby girls out of the surgery alive. Despite the all-star team, however, these 8-day-old girls faced a 99 percent chance that the surgery would fail. While each baby girl did have all of her own organs, they were both so incredibly young to go under such a complicated surgery.

While the family prepared for the worst, doctors went to work. A grueling five hours later? This team of doctors came out of the operating room with news they never expected to give. They also made history, as these were the two youngest people to ever undergo a conjoined-twin separation.

Both baby girls are expected to make full recoveries, and to be able to enjoy their lives with their fellow triplet, Camilla.
