Any parent, grandparent, teacher, and babysitter knows, kids love their toys. These days, though, toys can be quite pricey.
So how do we make sure our children have amazing toys, the kinds that build motor skills and empower them to let their imaginations run wild, without breaking the bank? Delving into DIY-ing and upcycling is a great place to start!
Whether you’re simply giving an old dresser a fresh new look, or using it to create something entirely different altogether, upcycling is a fun, environmentally friendly option for making a new home addition — and it's a great way to make one-of-a-kind toys for your kids’ playroom as well.
For this project, clever DIY-er Medina Grillo, from Grillo Designs, brilliantly transformed an old dresser into a kid-friendly tool bench. Scroll through below to see just how adorable this DIY undertaking turned out, and be sure to check out the full tutorial on her blog!
What a wonderful way to unleash your creativity, while building a unique, personalized toy that your kids will love for years to come!
To most folks, an old, tired nightstand like this screams “Sell me on Craigslist,” or “Just leave me out on the curb."
But what if you could, instead, transform this piece of old furniture into something entirely different?
That’s exactly the kind of potential DIY-er and Grillo Designs cofounder Medina Grillo spotted before she and her husband transformed this nightstand into an amazing new kids tool bench.
Her 3-year-old son loves watching his dad build with power tools. So, Grillo and her husband decided to build him a little workstation of his own, just like Dad’s!
Instead of wasting a great upcycle-worthy resource, Grillo grabbed paint, varnish, chalk, and a slew of other materials to breathe new life into this old piece of furniture.
She created a personalized play set, tailored to things her son might see his father use in his grown-up workstation.
It’s safe to say that Grillo has reached all-star status in the upcycling community.
In February of 2015, she and her sister, Saara Grillo, founded Grillo Designs Home Decorating, Upcycling and DIY Group, initially as a Facebook group focused on sharing DIY ideas with other upcycling enthusiasts.
Since its founding, the group has seen massive growth, with DIY-ers joining from all over the globe, posting and sharing incredible projects, like this cute kids tool bench, every day.
Their community is now 50,000+ DIY-ers strong, and growing. These folks are constantly finding innovative ways to breathe new life into old pieces, posting fabulous new ideas for projects like this, daily.
These upcyclers are finding innovative ways to reuse resources and express their creativity.
This adorable child-size tool bench is perfect for any parent who loves to upcycle, and any child who wants to be a little more "grown-up."
And the best part of DIY projects like these? Your child’s future play set could be in your closet or in your garage as an unused piece of furniture right now!
