Every day, we seem to hear stories of children kidnapped from their parents. It’s a very scary thing to think about, especially when you have kids. You want to enjoy taking them places, but no matter what, being on high alert the whole time is a necessity nowadays. This story, though, while beginning in terror, ended with true bravery.
Nine-year-old Nyla Prentiss, a fourth grader from Las Vegas, was put into a situation that caused her to act years beyond her years. Her mother, Karen Quinn, stopped by a 7-Eleven to use the ATM with Nyla and her 11-month-old brother, King.
While Quinn was inside using the ATM, Nyla said she noticed a man looking at her mom strangely before he ran outside and tried to open the door to their car. Quinn then came outside and asked the man, “What are you doing next to my car?”
Quinn said that she had locked the car before going inside, but when the man tried to open her car door again, her car sensed that her key was nearby, so it unlocked. Once the car unlocked, the man jumped in and zoomed away with the kids inside.
Nyla said, “I didn’t want to put my hands on him because he was driving so fast and I didn’t want to die, so then he turned and went the other way.” She then tried to reach for the unlock button, but the man swatted her away.
Nyla then asked the man, “Please sir, please let us out of the car. I ain’t got nothing to do with this, please just take the car and let us go.” Thankfully the kidnapper pulled over and told her to get out.

Once she was out of the car with her little brother, Nyla started to run. She didn’t know exactly where she was, but she knew she needed to get as far away as possible. Nyla ran five blocks barefoot, with King in her arms, back to the 7-Eleven. The staff at the 7-Eleven gave her a chair and something to drink as she patiently waited for the police and her mother.
