Donald Trump Says the U.S. Doesn’t Have Enough ‘Talented’ Workers

Various clips from President Donald Trump’s recent interview with Fox News‘ Laura Ingraham have gone viral, and one of them in particular is really upsetting to some of his supporters. In it, Trump defended H-1B visas and suggested that there aren’t enough “talented” American workers. Given that cracking down on immigration has been a huge part of Trump’s agenda, the apparent softening of his stance surprised and disgusted some MAGA supporters.

During the interview, Ingraham asked Trump about whether his administration would prioritize reducing H1-B visas. “If you want to raise wages for American workers, you can’t flood the country with tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of foreign workers,” Ingraham argued.

Trump said he agreed, but added that “you also do have to bring in talent.” Ingraham pushed back on this by saying that “we have plenty of talented people here.” But Trump disagreed. “No, you don’t, no, you don’t,” Trump said. “…No, you don’t have certain talents, and people have to learn. You can’t take people off an unemployment line and say, ‘I’m going to put you into a factory where we’re going to make missiles.'”

Trump used the ICE raid of a Georgia Hyundai facility as an example to illustrate his point. Back in September, hundreds of South Korean contractors were arrested and deported. “They had people from South Korea that made batteries all their life,” Trump explained. “You know, making batteries is very complicated. It’s not an easy thing. Very dangerous, a lot of explosions, a lot of problems.”

Because of how “complicated” and “dangerous” the work is, Trump argued that bringing in foreign workers is necessary in cases like that one. “They had like 500 or 600 people, early stages, to make batteries and to teach people how to do it,” he continued. “Well, they wanted them to get out of the country. You’re going to need that, Laura.”

Trump went on to say that although he knows Ingraham disagrees with his stance, it doesn’t make sense to have Americans who have been unemployed for several years make missiles. Ingraham was not the only person who disagreed. Supporters on social media said these comments make it “hard to support him now” and added that they “didn’t vote for this.”

Another person wrote, “Why does Donald Trump hate American workers so much?” Turning Point USA contributor Savannah Hernandez accused Trump of being “out of touch with the base.” Hernandez wrote, “Trump needs to get out of his bubble and back on the ground listening to the American people who elected him to work for us. His H-1B comment shows how out of touch with the base he has become. Disheartening.”
