Video Of Anthony Bourdain Explaining Why He’d Never Eat With Trump Resurfaces

Anthony Bourdain would’ve sat down for a meal with almost anyone—but not President Donald Trump. Apparently, he had to draw the line somewhere. In 2017, Bourdain was asked whether he would share a meal with Trump. Without hesitating, he answered “no,” but then explained why in a way that people find hilarious (and accurate). The clip has resurfaced on social media because Bourdain’s response continues to feel relevant during Trump’s second term.

Bourdain started by saying he’s not opposed to sitting down with people he disagrees with.

In case anyone assumed that Bourdain would decline to have a meal with anyone who had political beliefs he did not align with, he gave some examples that clearly suggested otherwise. So, the fact that Bourdain did not want to share a meal with Trump was not purely based on differing beliefs.

“I’m open to sitting down with anyone who’s nice to me,” he explained in the video. “I’ve sat down with everyone from Ted Nugent, the former chief of counterintelligence for the KGB, Hezbollah — people who I disagree with on many, if not every, fundamental issue.”

So, why not Trump?

It actually had more to do with who Trump is as a person. Ouch. Bourdain explained that he found Trump “personally objectionable,” which actually feels worse than being rejected due to your politics. “I have no expectation,” Bourdain continued at the time. “I just find him personally objectionable.”

He went on to explain why sharing a meal with Trump seemed far too unpleasant to deal with. “I don’t think he likes food,” Bourdain said. “And from people I know who have had to endure dinner with him, if you enjoy sitting there listening to him talk about himself, you know, great. God bless you.”

Besides, Bourdain made Trump’s taste in food sound questionable at best. “He only eats steak well done, and if he knows how to use chopsticks, much less is able to grasp them with those tiny little nubbins, I’d be shocked,” Bourdain added.

Of course, even people who (presumably) like Trump have criticized his eating habits. After all, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. once said, “The interesting thing about the president is that he eats really bad food, which is McDonald’s, and, you know, candy and Diet Coke. He drinks Diet Coke at all times.”

People still love Bourdain’s take.

The old clip was recently shared on Reddit and it had people laughing out loud. One person wrote, “He‘s really building up the big moment of revealing WHY he doesn’t want to eat with Trump and you expect something like: His politics are evil! But no. It’s much worse. Steak well done.”

Several people pointed out that the reasons Bourdain provided in the video actually say a lot about Trump. “He’s 100% correct,” someone else said. “Tr*mp has no natural curiosity when it comes to new foods or learning about different cultures. Who wants to sit down with him and eat McDonalds?”

And another person added, “Anthony Bourdain would rather dine with the KGB and Hezbollah than Donald Trump and if that isn’t an indictment of one’s character, then I don’t know what is.”
