WatchMojo Crashed Out in a YouTube Comment Section & the Internet Had a Field Day

When you’re in the spotlight, you’re bound to face some criticism at some point. A lot of the time, celebrities (and companies) choose to ignore the negative comments unless they’re related to a major controversy. So, people did not expect to see WatchMojo respond to a YouTube video about its “downfall.” The drama started earlier this month when a YouTube creator called voyan uploaded a video titled, “Watchmojo’s Downfall Should Be Celebrated.”

WatchMojo is best known for sharing Top 10 (or Top 5) lists in video format. The YouTube video created by voyan critiqued the company’s content—and the company had a lot to say about it.

The person managing the WatchMojo account said they didn’t actually watch the video.

However, they wrote a lengthy response with several different points as a rebuttal. “The day no one talks you is the day you are irrelevant, so thank you,” the company started. “OK, never heard of your channel and I admit I didn’t see the video, but a few points.”

The “few points” were as follows:

“- in 2006 when we started, we were obviously a bit ahead of the curve

– in 2012 when every channel was some vlogger sitting on the couch, we mastered our signature style and many cried as it looked more like VH1/MTV/ESPN and not what the vocal minority viewed as ‘youtube content.’

– the challenge in media is staying relevant, keeping your audience guessing, etc

– companies like Buzzfeed/Vice/VOX and channels that inspired themselves by us (by their own admission) all came and went. we managed to BOTH keep our OG fans happy and innovate.

– if by downfall you mean being a survivor, having 100+ FTEs who earn their living with us, then I will take it

– also, this may be inside baseball, but you are aware that AVOD is YouTube 1.0 and the platform has evolved, right? I could break it down for you, but why bother. Hint: viewers are spending nearly an hour per watch session watching our content… we are, in the ways that matter, more pertinent than ever…

– as per SoundMojo, again, think of 2012 when the vocal minority whined and then we got the last laugh. https://contextisking.com/2026/04/02/soundmojo-explained/”

The company wrapped it up with, “Haters, envious, jealous people are fuel to our fire…”

And people online also had a lot to say.

To be fair, the company has gotten a lot of attention due to this comment, so if that’s what they were going for, they succeeded. But those who reacted to the comment argued that the original creator who made the video about the company’s “downfall” was not even being overly critical or mean-spirited. It didn’t seem fair to classify the creator as a “hater” when he admitted to watching and enjoying WatchMojo’s content in the past. “dismissing what seems to be constructive criticism as ‘envious hate’ is a big sign of being extremely far up your own a–,” one commenter on Reddit wrote.

“Ah yes… The old ‘I don’t know who you are and I didn’t watch your video’-defense,” another critic added. “The most bada– and edgy (Read: Cringe and insecure) of all defenses…”

On YouTube, some people also left comments inspired by WatchMojo’s content: “Top 10 crashouts in history… Number 1: Watchmojo.” Another person added, “WatchMojo is GENUINELY proving this video’s point dawg.”

But some people defended the company.

What’s up with WatchMojo getting so much hate all of a sudden?

“Why can’t they defend themselves?” one Redditor wrote in response. “I hate this idea that a brand/creator can’t defend themselves when someone says something sh—y/false about them.”

While they certainly can defend themselves, some commenters said that doesn’t necessarily mean they should. “It makes them look extremely petty and insecure,” another Redditor wrote back.

The fact that WatchMojo chose to reply to this particular video made some critics think the YouTube creator’s critique “really struck a nerve.” Someone commented, “I don’t think you need to come out and defend yourself as the faceless watchmojo… you just let the comments slide and keep doing whatever you’re doing.”

This year, the company celebrated its 20th anniversary. “Having navigated the digital landscape from the arrival of YouTube to the current era of fragmented media, WatchMojo has moved beyond Top 10 lists to become a master curator of cinema, TV, gaming, and music,” a press release from the company read. “…Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, WatchMojo is expanding its footprint by expanding into scripted series, unscripted shows, live events, and innovative short-form formats.”
