Trump’s Announcement About Lindsey Graham Is Strange Even For Him

United States Sen. Lindsey Graham was a dedicated Donald Trump supporter, so when he died in July 2026, it was only natural for Trump to make a post about him on Truth Social. Except, when he did, the president didn’t include his signature rant about himself and his work for the country or tons of randomly capitalized words. Instead, he made a pretty straightforward but cold statement about the senator’s death.

According to the press release obtained by NBC News, Graham died from cardiac arrest and from a “brief and sudden illness.” He was 71 years old and the news of his death came as a shock to many. Maybe because the incumbent president is 80 himself and 84-year-old Sen. Mitch McConnell is still trucking along. Either way, though, Trump’s post about Graham raised some eyebrows.

People think Donald Trump might not actually care about Lindsey Graham’s death.

After Graham died, Trump immediately took to Truth Social, as he is prone to do when anything in the world happens, it seems. 

He wrote, “Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

It’s the “is dead!” exclamation that shocked some users on social media. When the post was shared on X (formerly Twitter) to show Trump’s immediate public response to the senator’s death, users had a lot to say about the way Trump commemorated the politician initially.

“I can’t believe he made a whole tweet about someone else w/o changing the subject back to himself,” an X user commented under the post.

Someone also wrote, “I know, that’s just Trump’s style. I’ll never forget learning Charlie Kirk died by reading a similar styled tweet from Trump ‘is dead!’ It’s jarring.”

Another person pointed out how Trump seems to use capitalized words in a way that you normally wouldn’t, grammatically speaking.

“The President I know only respects it if capitalized ‘dead’ vs. ‘Dead.'” they wrote.

Another added, “Not the exclamation mark lmao. It’s giving ‘the Wicked Witch is dead!'”

Someone else joked, as if speaking ad Trump, “Lindsey Graham is dead folks! Now let me complain about Obama and Joe.”

He posted about Lindsey Graham again afterward.

Whether or not it really is just Trump’s style to share these kinds of political updates on social media (and we can almost forgive it, since he’s a boomer if there ever was one), he posted on Truth Social again afterward, once again in reference to Graham and the unexpected death. In that post, Trump declared that flags in the U.S. be raised at half-staff for him.

“In honor of the remarkable life and achievements of Senator Lindsey Graham, a dear friend of mine, and a truly great man, who achieved so much for our Country, and his beloved Home State of South Carolina, I am ordering all American Flags throughout the United States lowered to Half Mast until Saturday evening at 6 P.M.,” he wrote. “GOD BLESS YOU LINDSEY! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

By contrast to his original post, it’s definitely more heartfelt, but people won’t soon forget the “is dead!” of it all.

Donald Trump and Lindsey Graham did have a friendship.

Before Graham’s death, he was a dedicated Trump supporter. In fact, Trump told NBC News that he and Graham spoke on the phone not long before Graham died. He said that he noted Graham was “a little tired” and that he now suspects people to appreciate Graham and his work more than they did when he was alive.

“But he was a fantastic person, and you’re gonna watch,” Trump said. “It’s gonna be a very big thing with him. He’s gonna be appreciated more now than he was when he was living, I think.”
