The defense attorney for Lindsay Clancy is asking President Donald Trump for a pardon for the mom who has admitted to killing her three young children.
Appearing on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday, lawyer Kevin Reddington said, “Mr. President, I would hope that you would consider this young lady – the type of person she is and what she’s been through – and consider a pardon,”
Reddington said that he hoped that Trump would act seeing as the president “felt compelled to speak out about this case,” per the New York Post.
Clancy, 36, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the case. She admitted to strangling her three children, Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months, in January 2023.
Clancy had entered an insanity defense, the Post reported, claiming she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.
The trial, which held America spellbound, ended in a mistrial on Friday.
“I assume there’s going to be another trial. It’s a terrible situation,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Friday following the mistrial announcement.
The president said, “Look, she did a horrible, horrible thing. Can’t be worse.”
Trump went on to say, “But you’ll find out what the price to pay is. There’ll be a price. It’s going to be a mental institution or jail or something. But I guess they’re going to go through another trial. It’s too bad.”
There was no immediate word from the White House on Tuesday about Reddington’s request for a presidential pardon.
But CBS News reported that Trump can’t pardon Clancy as she is under state, not federal, charges.
When asked about this, Reddington told CBS News, “The goal is pretty simple. It’s to seek help from Trump.”
He said, “I mean, if President Trump feels that this is a case that warrants that type of intervention from, you know, the executive branch, even though legally it’s not a federal case, he certainly has an awful lot of clout.”
