When you are a public figure, such as an actor or singer, you are going to have to do interviews with the press. Some entertainers handle this better than others. Sometimes celebs can be downright rude to the person interviewing them.
The alleged It Ends With Us controversy has brought these unfortunate occurrences back into the spotlight. While everyone can have a bad day, there is no need to take it out on others. Here are 10 times celebs could have been nicer to interviewers. One even committed arson.
Blake Lively
Speaking of It Ends With Us, one of the central players in the alleged controversy is actress and executive producer Blake Lively. Because so much of this controversy is unspoken, fans have been left to speculate. Some old interviews with Blake have resurfaced because of this, including a 2016 incident with Kjersti Flaa. In this interview Kjersti tried to compliment an obviously pregnant Blake on her baby bump. Blake didn't take this well and returned the sentiment to Kjersti, who was not pregnant. Later in the interview, Blake rejected a question about her costumes, implying the question is sexist.
David Cassidy
This is going to get a bit meta. Graham Norton, a popular Irish talk show host, spoke to This Morning about his worst experiencing conducting an interview. It was with American actor and musician David Cassidy. Graham was so excited to do it because he was a big fan as a teenager. According to Graham, David was "bitter" and "weird." He seemed to hate his legacy which was so disappointing.
Ben Affleck
This is another interview about a bad interview example. Australian television host Sarah Ferguson opened up to the Sydney Morning Herald’s Sunday Life magazine about her worst experience on the job. The 7.30 host struggled to get through a 2023 interview with Ben Affleck, who was promoting his new film Air. “He was just rude, not interested, going through the motions,” Sarah recalled.
Vin Diesel
In 2016 YouTuber Carol Moreira tried to interview Fast & Furious star Vin Diesel. He had other ideas and kept interrupting to hit on her. It was so bad that she had to address the issue before posting it on YouTube.
"He began to hit on me in the middle of the interview, say that I was pretty, and he interrupted the interview three times to talk about it," she explained. "I was laughing, completely uncomfortable. I did not like it. At the time I did not know how to react, but you will see that I was uncomfortable, it was not nice that he interrupted my work."
Johnny Depp
A 2018 Rolling Stone interview with Johnny Depp can be summed up in two words: hot mess. It lasted 72 hours. Stephen Rodrick described him as "incoherent" and appearing "scared" and "hunted." Johnny had just lost his $650 million fortune and was blaming anyone but himself. He was suing The Management Group, the company that was supposed to take care of his finances. This was in addition to his divorce from Amber Heard.
During the three-day interview, Johnny never appeared in the daytime, was constantly drunk or high, and made many misleading and sometimes offensive statements. To top it off, at the end of it all he couldn't remember how to open his gate so Stephen had to climb over the fence to leave.
Bobcat Goldthwait
This 1994 interview is so bad it is actually criminal. This all went down on The Tonight Show Starring Jay Leno. It was supposed to be another day at the office with guest comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, until he pulled out a lighter and set his chair on fire. This was not a bit. Jay put out the fire with his water.
Bobcat faced criminal charges and eventually pleaded no contest to setting the blaze. His punishment was a $3,888 fine and three years of informal probation. He also appeared in a PSA for a local burn center.
Jesse Eisenberg
In 2013, the Social Network star was cruel to interviewer, Romina Puga, the host of Univision. Jessie Eisenberg called her the "Carrot Top of interviewers" which wasn't exactly a compliment. He was critical of her the entire time as well. It was like he was trying to be funny but the jokes at someone else's expense came across as cheap.
Romina wrote about this experience on her blog calling it a "self-esteem butchering" even though it only last five minutes it was still humiliating. She even tried to connect with him on a human level afterwards and he simply quipped: "You're still here?"
Jake Gyllenhaal
After her stint in Bachelor Nation, Ali Fedotowsky leveraged her fame to cross over into hosting. She started working for E! News and interviewing celebs on the red carpet. Jake Gyllenhaal didn't make her first day easy.
"He walks up, I'm shaking in my heels. I say to him, 'Hi, Jake who'd you bring tonight?' Like, for a date, like, who’s your date tonight? … He goes, 'Bye bye,' and walked away from me," she recalled on the Women On Top podcast.
Miles Teller
In a 2015 interview with Miles Teller for Esquire magazine, interviewer Anna Peele called her subject "kind of a dick." He talked about his penis to her and to the waitress, gushed about his own good looks, and admitted no one from college still talks to him. When the interview is over, he ordered a "do not rape" Uber for Anna.
Hugh Grant
Hugh Grant is a repeat offender. Jon Stewart banned him from The Daily Show after a 2009 appearance. "He's a big pain in the ass," Jon told Stephen Colbert in a 2012 Q&A.
Hugh didn't seem to learn his lesson. In 2023 he was so over it when talking to Ashley Graham on the Oscars red carpet. He would only give her small, sarcastic responses and even rolled his eyes at the end.
