Viola Miller was 62 years old and had been blind for over 40 years. She grew up in San Diego with her parents and loved heading to the beach and surfing the waves when she was younger.
Viola’s parents worked in the surf industry, and even though they encouraged their daughter to follow her dreams of becoming a professional surfer, fate had other plans. When she was 21, Viola was with her family in the car driving home from a surf competition when they got into a horrific accident.
Tragically, Viola’s parents died instantly and the 21-year-old was left in a coma for several weeks. When she finally came out of the coma, it was quickly discovered that Viola was blind due to a brain injury from the crash. Since that day, her life had never been the same.
After losing her parents, Viola moved to New Jersey to begin her recovery and to be with family. It took a few years, but once Viola committed to her recovery, she began to thrive. She eventually went to college and became a physiotherapist with a specialization in sports injuries.
Even though her friends and family encouraged her to get back into surfing, Viola just couldn’t put her heart back into that sport as it was just too painful. One of her new hobbies was taking long walks around the city.

As Viola grew older, she started to experience more health issues. She developed diabetes and would often suffer from dizzy spells due to low blood sugar. One day, when she was walking through the train station, she started to feel unwell. When she asked a nearby employee for help, he promptly told her that it was not his job to help blind individuals make their way around the station.
