Brian Wilson's family has filed for a conservatorship following the death of his wife, Melinda. The Beach Boys cofounder and songwriter's family shared the news via Instagram on February 15, 2024, writing that the decision was made "after careful consideration and consultation among Brian, his seven children, Gloria Ramos and Brian’s doctors."
Brian is now 81 years old and his wife died in January at age 77. People reported that Brian is also dealing with a "major neurocognitive disorder (such as dementia)," according to the filing.
"We are confirming that longtime Wilson family representatives LeeAnn Hard and Jean Sievers will serve as Brian’s co-conservators of the person," his family shared on Instagram.
The women who were mentioned — publicist LeeAnn Hard and manager Jean Sievers — “have had a close relationship with Mr. and Mrs. Wilson for many years, and Mr. Wilson trusts them,” USA Today reported.

Prior to her death, Brian's wife Melinda Ledbetter was taking care of him. She “attended to Mr. Wilson's daily living needs, as Mr. Wilson is unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter," reported People.
According to the filing, Brian will not be able to appear in court for the hearing that is currently scheduled for April 26, Variety reported. This is because "he is easily distracted, often even when aware of surroundings, and its purpose," according to his doctor.
The doctor also noted that Brian "often makes spontaneous irrelevant or incoherent utterances. Has very short attention span and while unintentionally disruptive, is frequently unable to maintain decorum appropriate to the situation," per Variety.
In their Instagram post, Brian's family explained that "there will be no extreme changes to the household."
"This decision was made to ensure that there will be no extreme changes to the household and Brian and the children living at home will be taken care of and remain in the home where they are cared for by Gloria Ramos and the wonderful team at the house who have been in place for many years helping take care of the family," they wrote on Instagram.
Gloria Ramos is Brian's housekeeper, according to Slate.
In the Instagram statement, Brian's family also made it clear that Brian will still have the freedom to do things he enjoys.
"Brian will be able to enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects as well as participate in any activities he chooses," the family noted in the statement.
Brian's doctor also noted that he is currently taking medication for his illness.
When Brian's wife died in January, Brian wrote she "was more than my wife. She was my savior."
"She was my anchor. She was everything for us," the Instagram post sharing the news of her death read.
