Bruce Willis Is ‘Still Bruce’ But ‘Incommunicative’ Since Dementia Diagnosis Says Friend

Our lives are made richer through our friendships. Actor Bruce Willis seems to have a good one in Moonlighting creator Glenn Gordon Caron. He recently opened up to the New York Post about how his buddy is doing. Bruce was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2022.

Bruce worked with Glenn on the popular dramedy series that graced the ABC airwaves from 1985 to 1989. The series was recently added to Hulu. Bruce and Cybill Shepherd play private detectives.

According to Glenn, Bruce is "not totally verbal" and is "incommunicative." This does not mean he is not aware. He is "still Bruce" in many other ways.

Glenn wants to remain in Bruce’s life regardless of his condition. He tries to visit once a month. "I'm not always quite that good but I try and I do talk to him and his wife and I have a casual relationship with his three older children," he shared. "I have tried very hard to stay in his life."

Glenn clearly cares deeply for his friend and it is difficult for him to see him battle this disease. "He's an extraordinary person," Glenn stated. "The thing that makes [his disease] so mind-blowing is [that] if you've ever spent time with Bruce Willis, there is no one who had any more joie de vivre than he. He loved life and … just adored waking up every morning and trying to live life to its fullest."

Glenn struggles to understand this cruel disease. "So the idea that he now sees life through a screen door, if you will, makes very little sense," he continued. "He's really an amazing guy."

Glenn believes that Bruce recognizes him when he visits. "My sense is the first one to three minutes he knows who I am," he explained. "He's not totally verbal; he used to be a voracious reader — he didn't want anyone to know that — and he's not reading now. All those language skills are no longer available to him, and yet he’s still Bruce."

"When you’re with him you know that he's Bruce and you're grateful that he’s there," he added. Things are not all rosy though, “the joie de vivre is gone."

Bruce is excited that Moonlighting is going to be available to a whole new audience. "The process has taken quite a while and Bruce's disease is a progressive disease, so I was able to communicate with him, before the disease rendered him as incommunicative as he is now, about hoping to get the show back in front of people," Glen explained. "I know it means a lot to him."

"I know he's really happy that the show is going to be available for people, even though he can't tell me that," he stated "When I got to spend time with him we talked about it and I know he’s excited.” Bruce’s work is part of his legacy that will live on for decades to come.

Beyond acting, Bruce is a proud girl dad and grandfather. Bruce shares three daughters with his ex-wife Demi Moore: Rumer Glenn Willis, 35, Scout LaRue Willis, 32, and Tallulah Belle Willis, 29. He shares two daughters with his wife Emma Heming Willis: Mabel Ray Willis, 11, and Evelyn Penn Willis, 9. Rumer gave birth to Louetta Isley Thomas Willis in April 2023, making Bruce a grandpa.
