An 81-year-old woman who was hit by one of Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh's police escorts last week is now in a coma. The Duchess of Edinburgh was traveling through London at the time of the incident. It is unknown if the escort stopped to help the woman after hitting her.
The hit sent the elderly woman flying 7 meters (about 23 feet) across the road. It happened Wednesday around 3:20 p.m. local time.
Buckingham Palace made a statement shortly after the incident.
"The Duchess's heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the injured lady and her family. She is grateful for the swift response by the emergency services and will keep abreast of developments," the statement from the palace said. "Further comment at this time would not be appropriate while the incident is being investigated."
No other pedestrians were injured in the accident. However, the 81-year-old woman's condition is said to have worsened, and she is in critical condition.
