As Kai Trump got ready to make her red carpet debut at the ESPYs, she reflected on how her appearance has changed. While speaking to Florida-based beautician-makeup artist Brianna, Kai, 19, made it clear that she’d rather look like her mom, Vanessa Trump, than her dad, Donald Trump Jr.
In a video shared to her YouTube channel, Kai said, “My face has changed a lot. Honestly, in the past like three months, it’s changed.”
The 19-year-old also said she feels like she has “aged a lot.”
But Brianna told her that she has “aged in a good way.” Brianna also assured Kai that she looks like her mother. “When you were saying you look more like your mom, you one thousand percent do,” she told Kai.
Kai agreed with her, but was also happy to hear that. “Yeah, I do,” she responded. “But that’s a great compliment.”
She quietly added, “I’d rather look like my mom.” Oof. The comment feels a tad bit insulting toward her dad. Just a tad.
Brianna also added that Kai is “glowing up” and “aging like some fine wine.”
Interestingly, when Kai appeared on the red carpet, people actually compared her to her grandpa.
Obviously, even though Kai thinks she looks older, she doesn’t look that old. It was her makeup that garnered the most attention on social media because she looked rather… orange to people, almost as if she had borrowed President Donald Trump’s makeup. Some people even jokingly questioned whether having an orange skin tone is genetic.
Another reason Kai’s ESPYs look made people think of her grandpa is because she wore a glittering gold dress. Based on how the president has decorated the White House, flashy gold decor seems to be his thing.
Some commenters also compared her to her father, which she would probably not be too happy about, based on what she said in her video. Overall, though, a lot of critics concluded that Kai did look older at the ESPYs—but not because she has aged dramatically. It had more to do with her makeup, which really reminded people of the stereotypical Mar-a-Lago look.
As a young woman in the spotlight, Kai’s appearance has come under scrutiny.
And some of the comments have been pretty mean. The fact that her grandpa is so unpopular certainly doesn’t help. Still, some people on social media have spoken up about the amount of negative comments about Kai’s appearance. “These comments are vile about a young woman,” one X user wrote. “People should be ashamed of themselves.”
While Kai was at the ESPYs, a Us Weekly reporter asked her how she deals with all of the (sometimes negative) attention that comes from existing in the spotlight.
Kai said that, for her, “balance” is key. Although she documents her life on YouTube, she also tries her best to “keep on living (her) life like a normal teenager.”
“You’re just like us, right?” the reporter questioned. Kai responded, “100 percent.” She said that even though she was making her red carpet debut at the ESPYs, she would later go home and spend time with her friends, just like a “normal” teenager.
