Internet Convinced MAGA Really Is A Cult After Seeing Church Video

A video circulating on social media is sparking conversations about President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement and Christianity. To some people, the clip seems like evidence that MAGA really is “a cult.” Interestingly, according to a Pew Research Center survey from 2020, only 35% of Americans believe Trump is Christian, but 64% of white evangelicals say he’s at least “somewhat” religious. And a much more recent survey found that a significant percentage of white evangelicals still support Trump.

His general approval rating is not particularly high, but 69% of white evangelicals “approve of Trump’s job performance,” per a February 2026 survey from Pew Research Center.

Some people were shocked to discover that so-called “MAGA churches” are a thing.

Even before the recent video started circulating, Christians who do not support Trump have faced backlash on social media for speaking up against “MAGA Christianity.” In the more recent video, churchgoers’ MAGA views are on full display, and there’s even a “Trump 2024” sign. It’s unclear where the video came from, and some social media users were so shocked by it that they questioned its authenticity. “this has to be AI there’s no way this is real,” one person wrote in response.

Others argued that people should not be “worshipping” politicians.

As of March 6, 2026, the video has been viewed more than seven million times. It’s also received tons of negative comments. MAGA has been described as “a cult” many times before, but people online seriously mean it this time. “Okay, I know this gets tossed around a lot, but no this is actual cult behavior, and example of why MAGA is a cult,” one X user wrote. “This video is a perfect example of it.”

Someone else said, “As a Republican and Christian, this is disgusting and should not exist! We do not worship politicians, we worship God!”

Many critics saw the video as an example of “idolatry” and called it “blasphemous,” with one person writing, “this is literally idol worship and it’s one of the biggest sins.”

Trump has also been called out for comments he’s made about religion.

Though he has a lot of religious supporters, on several occasions, the president has joked about how he’s not so sure he’ll “make it” to heaven. While addressing the National Prayer Breakfast in February, Trump said he’s “not a perfect candidate” for heaven, but he could “make it” because of all the “good things” he’s done.

“I said I’m never going to make it to heaven,” Trump said. “I just don’t think I qualify. I don’t think there’s a thing I can do. But all of these good things I’m doing, including for religion. You know, religion is back now hotter than ever before.”

However, his son Eric Trump seems more confident. In October 2025, he asserted that his dad “will go to heaven” because he’s “saving Christianity” and “saving God.”
