Mob Boss Matteo Messina Denaro, Italy’s Most Wanted Man, Arrested In Palermo

Italy's most wanted man has been arrested.

Mob Boss Matteo Messina Denaro was one of the top bosses of the Cosa Nostra Mafia in Sicily. He's been a fugitive since 1993, but police recently burst into a private health clinic in Palermo, where he was being treated, and put him in handcuffs.

“It is a victory for all the police forces that have worked together over these long years to bring the dangerous fugitive to justice,” Italy’s Chief of Police Lamberto Giannini said in a statement.

Many government and law enforcement officials also tweeted about their relief at the arrest.

Denaro was sentenced to life in prison in 2020 for his role in the 1992 murders of two anti-mafia prosecutors, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, as well as bombings in 1993 in Florence, Milan, and Rome that killed 10 people.

The mob boss managed to maintain his power even while he was a fugitive. According to the New York Times, he managed assets and even infiltrated economic enterprises, like solar energy companies.

It is also believed he may have been involved with the 1993 murder of a 12-year-old who was captured to pressure his father not to reveal mafia secrets. The child's remains were found dissolved in acid.
