Michele and Jole Betty were an older Italian couple who lived in solitude in a small apartment in Rome. Even though the pair had gotten used to being on their own, things weren’t always like this for the older couple.
The couple met decades ago when they were two enthusiastic art students. They immediately fell in love and didn’t even wait until they had both finished their degrees before getting married in a small ceremony on the outskirts of the city.
They lived their younger years travelling all around Europe selling their art and attending lavish parties with interesting people. The thrilling times they had together made it difficult to believe that the pair grew up to be a couple who would spend night after night sitting on the couch watching television with nothing to say to one another.
The Bettys never had children as they felt like their lifestyle was not conducive to taking care of small children and they had no regrets in that arena. There’s no real way to be sure, but some people believed that it was the eventful lifestyle they led for many years that resulted in a Parkinson’s diagnosis for Michele and Alzheimer’s disease for Jole.
One night, in their tiny apartment, the couple were all alone watching the news when they both couldn’t help but break down in tears. They both had been feeling incredibly down throughout their health crises and a bleak story on the news made them erupt in emotion.

According to Global Citizen, when their neighbors heard sobs coming from their apartment, they called the police to come and check on the couple. When four agents showed up and were met with a lonely and forgotten elderly couple, they decided to step up and cook them a meal.
