Sarah Jessica Parker Wants Her Daughters To Enjoy Cake, Cookies, And A Healthy Body Image

Sarah Jessica Parker shares three children with husband Matthew Broderick. Her son James Wilkie is 21 years old and her twin daughters, Tabitha and Marion, are 14. It is important to Sarah and Matthew that their kids have a healthy relationship with food.

Both Sarah and Matthew do lots of cooking at home to make this happens. Sarah also makes sure not to prevent her daughters from eating things like cake and cookies. Her parents were restrictive with her and that didn’t work. She opened up about this on Ruthie’s Table 4 podcast in April 2024.

Sarah is aware of the double standard that exists for women when it comes to body image. She doesn’t want her daughters to learn to feel bad about liking food from her. “I [have] girls,” she explained. “I didn't want them to have a relationship with food that was antagonistic or they felt like this was their enemy and that they were going to have to sort of like stake out a position with food.”

Sarah wasn’t allowed to eat sweets when she was growing up. She wasn’t going to do that to her girls. Plus, it had the opposite impact than her parents intended. “And of course all we did the minute we moved out was buy Entenmann’s cakes and cookies," she stated. "I didn't want that [for my kids]."

Sarah took a different approach with her kids. “In our house, we have cookies, we have cake, we have everything,” she explained. “And I think as a result, you kind of have a healthier relationship. My daughters will have the figures they have and hopefully they'll be healthy and they’re athletes and they enjoy food.”

Sarah and Matthew both cook family dinners most days. They switch off. “On Sunday, Matthew cooks. We both cook every single day, every single day. We probably eat dinner as a family every night,” she stated.

Since both Matthew and her are busy working actors, things can shift around, but they typically don’t eat out. Sometimes Sarah will pick up dinner from a restaurant, but she does not like to use delivery apps.

Sarah and Matthew’s secret weapon is soup. Recently, she and Matthew pre-made some to have for busy days. “I made lamb stew and Matthew made a white bean soup, so we knew we have that,” she stated. “I like to have it in the fridge for matinee days.”

Sarah and Matthew love their domestic routine, even if it isn’t super exciting. “We love to cook,” she stated. “And it's boring to keep saying to each other what are we gonna eat? What are we gonna eat? Are you going to go to the grocery store? Am I going to go to the market. But it's kind of just what we do."

Sarah and Matthew’s kids appreciate all their hard work. "We don't think of ourselves highly as like chefs or anything like that," she explained. "Our children always … they always say like, 'Wow, we're really lucky. We get to, we have dinner every night.'"
