What to Know
President Donald Trump’s recent DoorDash stunt is sparking a ton of conversation online. “DoorDash Grandma” Sharon Simmons delivered McDonald’s to the White House on Monday, April 13. Critics called the Trump administration and DoorDash out for staging a photo-op, given that the “DoorDash Grandma” was not just a random delivery person. Instead, she was there in support of Trump’s “No Tax On Tips” initiative.
Unsurprisingly, Trump did not stay on topic, though. Apparently, he had other things on his mind, and also tried to ask Simmons about trans women competing in women’s sports.
The pivot backfired.

Turns out, the “DoorDash Grandma” was there because of the policy that actually affects her, and not to share her thoughts on other aspects of Trump’s agenda. Last year, Simmons earned about $11,000 in tips as a Dasher. Under Trump’s new policy, that income is no longer taxed. But instead of focusing on that, Trump decided to ask Simmons a totally random question about trans rights.
“Do you think that men should play in women’s sports?” he asked her, for some reason.
Simmons did not engage with this random question.
She told Trump, “I really don’t have an opinion on that.” But Trump could not accept this and continued to try to get her to share her thoughts on the topic, even though she clearly did not want to do so. “You don’t?” Trump questioned. “I’ll bet you do.”
Simmons responded, “No. I’m here about no tax on tips.” Props to the “DoorDash Grandma” for standing her ground. Apparently, her response was firm enough for Trump and he eventually moved on, saying, “Yeah, OK.”
The moment has gone viral online.

“DoorDash grandma” is at the White House to talk about no tax on tips, and Trump can’t even stay on topic. Immediately pivots to culture war bullshit.

On X, one person called Simmons’ response “the lady’s nice way of saying I DON’T CARE.” Someone else said, “Good for her. He was not happy with her response.” On Reddit, some critics noticed that Trump seemed taken aback and didn’t even know how to respond. “So funny!” someone wrote. “He doesn’t know how to react it’s been so long someone besides press pushed back.”
“Good for her! That takes courage,” another commented wrote. Several people argued that based on that relatively short interaction, Simmons “acts more qualified” than Trump and “would make a better president.”
“She has a stronger spine than 99% of Congress!” one critic argued.
At the same time, others found the photo op pretty sad and noted that it kind of backfired in another way as well—because having her praise his tax policy did not necessarily send the message the Trump administration was likely hoping for. “I’m sorry,” one critic wrote. “The president is standing at a press opportunity next to a retirement-age woman who is doing GIG WORK, as though this is positive promotion for the tax policy and not a complete and utter failure of a society when elders have no choice to continue working, and in one of the most exploitative industries, to boot?”
Someone else argued that this might explain why she didn’t seem too worried about trans women playing sports. “I think she’s more concerned about the fact that as a grandma, she still has to deliver food to make ends meet,” they speculated.
