United States President Donald Trump tried to get in the way of Spain’s World Cup title celebrations, while FIFA boss Gianni Infantino seemed desperate to usher him away.
It was a replay of the Club World Cup final last year, when Trump didn’t leave the stage and stayed for celebrations, despite receiving looks from the Chelsea players.
Spain won the 2026 World Cup title with a 1-0 win against 10-man Argentina after extra-time. Trump and Infantino were in charge of handing the trophy to captain Rodri.
Trump then chatted with Rodri and a few other Spanish players, who looked desperate to lift the trophy – but refused to do so while the US president was with the group.
Even Infantino looked embarrassed, but Trump insisted on standing alongside the Spain players. He eventually moved to the side but still made sure to pose on the far right of the victory photo.
Both Trump and Infantino were heavily booed by fans when they walked onto the pitch for the trophy ceremony.
The final between Spain and Argentina was the first World Cup game attended by Trump, who said before kick-of that the US would like to host the extravaganza again.
The US president, however, still made headlines during the tournament.
The most notable issue was his call to Infantino seeking a review of FIFA’s one-match ban on US forward Folarin Balogun due to his red card. While the review went Trump’s way, Infantino insisted that the president had nothing to do with it.
Trump’s politics were also in the spotlight when the US administration denied entry to Somali World Cup referee Omar Artan, while Iran had to move their base camp to Mexico and were subjected to strict entry measures.
