The victim's name has not yet been released. Records show that Garfield was booked into jail on May 1. She was not granted bail.

Garfield faces multiple charges. She stands accused of murder and felony discharge of a firearm. It was her father who reported the alleged crimes.

A friend of the two women corroborated this statement. They showed investigators text messages from the victim saying she wanted to die but was too afraid to do it herself. They also said the two women had an "understanding."

The women’s plan was reportedly for one of them to kill the other and then themselves. The alleged shooting took place in a Saratoga Springs home. Detectives found a 9mm bullet by the victim's body.

The investigation is still ongoing. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. In 2021 alone there were 1.70M attempted suicides and 48,183 deaths.
