Renate Stumpf first locked eyes with a soldier named Louis Demetriades at an Army base in Germany. The year was 1959 and they were both 18.
Louis fell hard for Renate, a kitchen worker on the base. It wasn't long before they were married.
The couple moved to the United States where they started a family and had three children. They struggled financially and didn't have much of a support system in the states. Renate could barely speak English at the time, and pretty soon she and Louis were arguing all the time.
After 13 years, Renate and Louis filed for divorce. The years passed by, they moved to different states and they both remarried.
After their respective spouses passed away, Renate and Louise reconnected on Facebook. They rekindled their romance through long distance phone calls.
It'd been over 40 years since they had last spoken, but the spark was still there.
Then one day, while Renate was working her job at Walmart, she turned around to find her ex-husband standing in front of her. He had driven 286 miles from Memphis, Tennessee to Fort Smith, Arkansas, and he had something he wanted to say in person.
