It's been a rough couple of days for 90 Day Fiancé star Karine Martins Staehle — and it seems like her life may be taking a different course than expected. The Brazilian reality star has left husband Paul Staehle after an altercation that made its way onto Instagram.
The two initially met online. As sparks flew, Paul traveled to Brazil to be with Karine. They depended heavily on a translation app in order to communicate with each other, but that didn't stop their plans to get married. Their popularity increased after appearing on both seasons one and two of 90 Day Fiancé.
Originally, Paul had to live in Brazil. But once the couple straightened out all of the legalities and their paperwork, they moved to the United States. In March of 2019, they welcomed baby Pierre into their family.
While they were both ecstatic about Pierre, his birth raised some questions. The couple sadly suffered from two miscarriages prior to Pierre's birth. Based on the timing of how things happened, Paul actually questioned the paternity of their son. It's a sensitive topic to bring up publicly, which Paul did. As expected, it humiliated Karine. Unfortunately, that wasn't the end of their drama.
"This baby is a surprise blessing," Paul had told Cosmopolitan back in 2018. But he was really emphasizing the surprise element. "The miscarriages were something neither of us will ever forget. It brought us even closer together as we put aside arguments and disagreements to comfort one another. It is a tragic life moment no one should have to endure."
The issues happened after the doctor warned the pair to wait around six months before trying to conceive again. Karine became pregnant before that, which worried Paul. "We were very nervous," he admitted. "But we are in the second trimester with this current pregnancy."
Pierre arrived happy and healthy. However, the couple found new reasons to be upset with each other. Paul, for one, doesn't have the cleanest history — and it's caused a lot of issues with the couple moving forward. "Roughly 10 years ago I was accused of burning my own property," he said on the show, per Heavy. "And I was incarcerated pending trial for 18 months until I took a plea agreement and got on probation."
He also had a restraining order filed against him from a past relationship, which is never a good sign. "My ex-girlfriend and I both took out restraining orders against each other," he explained. "And I ended up sending her a text message, which directly violated that order. So I got locked back up over it."
The couple's recent incident is just as disturbing. According to People magazine, Karine finally spoke out about what's been going on with her relationship — but it seems like it's over. She posted a translated message on Instagram. "All this past days I had a lot going on," she wrote, per ETOnline. "I had issues where the police was called because I feared for my life and my son's life which led me to ask for help and ultimately be rescued from an environment that no longer was healthy for none of us involved in the situation."
"I'm getting the best help I could ever get and I'm really thankful for all the people involved in this," she continued. She thanks her family and fans for being concerned about her well-being. From the sound of it, her relationship is beyond repair.
"Relationships are hard and sometimes it just can't be fixed anymore. I need this time to organize my thoughts, work on myself and care for my son after everything we have been through in the last year and a half," she added. Fans started to get concerned after a panicked social media message from Paul. He said he couldn't find either Karine or Pierre.
On Sunday, Paul was legally gearing up to prove something went wrong. He posted video footage of a police encounter with a caption of "Recording Before Statement Of Accusations Was Written." In the video, Paul is seen with Pierre. At one point, he tells an officer, "I have her on camera assaulting me, by the way. Just so you know."
On Instagram, his followers weren't too kind. "I feel so sorry for Karine," one stated. "She's the best thing you could ever have and she gave you a son. The very least you can do is respect her. Come to Hawaii Karine! I'll take care of you."
"You posting more and more trying to further justify your actions and reasoning behind treating your wife so poorly is disgusting," another fan added. "I hope she's able to escape your tournament and mind games soon!" While it's already hard to escape a bad relationship, it's even harder when you're in the public eye.
Karine's fan base was definitely there to support her. "First of all. She has issued her statement," a viewer stated to Paul in the comments. "She is escaping an abusive relationship where the man who was supposed to be her protector and provider is now trying to publically slander her name and is doing a pretty active smear campaign. It's a shame. She is your WIFE."
The two have been feuding for quite some time. According to People magazine, Paul announced back in November that Karine had "started divorce proceedings" in Manaus, Brazil. The good news is that Karine and Pierre aren't missing, and they are presumably not in danger at the moment. But the bad news is, things will likely get messier with the family.
While it's since been deleted, it's been stated that Karine got real by posting what's been going on between them. For one, Paul reportedly forces Karine to perform oral sex. "If I refuse he throw things, he yells, or he threats to call police, he currently hold my green card and all my documents," she reportedly said.
"I am not allowed to leave the house, he monitor my phone [and] he have cameras around the house and he can see through his phone who arrives or who leaves. He threats take our son Pierre away if I ever leave," she continued. So, like the strong woman she is, Karine did everything she could to stay safe. It might be a shock for some 90 Day Fiancé fans who were rooting for them, but it seems as if these two are much healthier apart.
