It was unbelievable. Katie Moraida's water broke a week earlier than she was due. Katie and her husband, Daniel, got into the car and started driving to Sutter Roseville Hospital.
The couple stopped just a few yards away from the emergency room, but baby Sawyer couldn't wait. Katie pushed and Sawyer was born in the front seat.
Local police saw the delivery and called the paramedics. They came over, cut the umbilical cord, then drove the mother and child a few yards to the hospital. They were in the ambulance for about 10 minutes.
Weeks later, Katie and Daniel were shocked when they received an ambulance bill for over $3,500. It was almost as bad as the couple who were charged $40 just for holding their newborn. The mother and son were charged individually.
“For not even a full minute of ambulance ride. We had already done the hard part, delivered our child in the front seat of our car,” Daniel said.
Katie's insurance covered her half of the bill but, due to a coding issue, the insurance would not cover Sawyer's half. Finally, after 10 months, the insurance company admitted they made a mistake and covered most of the bill.
“I would’ve walked into the hospital, grabbed a wheelchair, and put them both in the wheelchair and pushed them up myself,” said Daniel.
