Some love stories are so romantic and tragic, it seems they would only be possible in movies or fairy tales.
But Freddy and Dolly Acerra's love story is very real, and after their death, the Acerra family is celebrating it.
Three days after celebrating 65 years of marriage, the couple passed away within three hours of one another, separately. Both were quite sick: 86-year-old Dolly was battling intestinal cancer and the early stages of Alzheimer's before passing away at home, in her sleep. Freddy, 89, was fighting bladder cancer and had just returned to the hospital before he succumbed to his illness.
Their son, Gaetano, was bringing his mother breakfast when he found her, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal.
He received the hospital's call about his father's passing just hours later, just as his family was gathering to break the news to Freddy about Dolly's death.
Gaetano admits that his mother didn't quite understand everything he told her, especially regarding her husband's ill health.
Then one day she said, "Let's go, Freddy," and they did.
The two met and got married in Italy before moving to the United States. Freddy and Dolly's family is absolutely heartbroken, but the Acerras are hoping the couple's beautiful love story will be remembered for generations to come.
