The concept of self-care was always somewhat of a struggle for me. Many moons ago, I had two significant periods of time where I was out of work. The first was right after college, near the start of the recession. The second time was a layoff from a job that I had actually moved states to take on. For about a year, living was a struggle — and when dinners consist of items like ramen, rice and beans, and Campbell's soup, you don't really think about manicures and relaxing baths .
But truthfully, I should have. Without self-care in the mix, I was wearing myself down. I forgot what it was like to enjoy myself. Instead, free moments were spent dreading whether or not my situation would ever change.
Thankfully, it did. These days, I'm a lot happier, and I'm able to support a toddler. Toddlers are … interesting creatures. While I love watching my daughter explore the world, witnessing her explore her emotions can often be trying. It's been important for me to fit self-care into my own schedule if I want to be a loving and patient mom. Taking a moment to breathe and focus can often be the best way to avoid a meltdown — both on your end and your child's end.
That's why I created my own mini self-care kit that comes in handy whenever I need a break. Even better, I can easily throw it into a bag of luggage andtravel with it . This is essential for every mom (and every woman, to be honest). Here's what mine includes, if you're looking for a little inspiration.
Sally Hansen Nail Polish
It's no manicure, but it's something. Since I'm typing for roughly 75% of the day, it's always nice to add a little color to my nails. Here's my favorite thing about this particular line of Sally Hansen nail polish. The colors are beautiful and versatile, and the polish truly dries much quicker than any other polish I've ever tried. So if you're on the go, it's the perfect type to grab and put in your bag.

A Sheet Mask
Sheet masks have been my go-to for self-care. These masks from Miss Spa are especially fun. They're small enough to fit in a travel tote, but they get the job done. They're also cruelty-free, which is a step that every beauty supply company should take.

Fun-Sized Bath Bomb
You probably had no idea that bath bombs came in "fun sizes," like candy. But that just makes it perfect to tuck this one away for travel, or when you need it the most. All of the bath bombs sold by Da Bomb — a company created by two young sisters — include a fun little surprise inside. It'll change the way you think about bath bombs.

Mini Jade Roller
This is the perfect addition to your self-care travel bag. According to BeautyExpert, jade rollers help you ease stress and also promote healthy circulation. Some believe that they also help tone your face, if you're looking to make minor improvements. Also, science aside, it feels really good.

Essential Oils
You've probably heard a lot about essential oils. For the record, no — they're not a cure-all for everything. They should never take the place of actual medicine, if you're on the fence. That said, they can definitely lift your spirits. This lavender scent is perfect to throw in your bag and use whenever you need a moment of clarity.

Eos Lip Balm
These lip balms are also in my bag. What makes them different from your standard ChapStick? ChapStick definitely works, but these sticks by Eos make it feel like you're pampering your lips with a plush pillow. It's a weird description, I know. But once you try it yourself, you'll know exactly what I mean. If chamomile isn't your thing, there are a bunch of other varieties. One of the best buys is likely the multipack in Sweet Mint, available online through the link below.

Soap & Glory Moisturizer
Finally, I've included some face moisturizer. Moisturizing my face is one of those self-care practices I've managed to do most of my life. Typically, my go-to is Garnier SkinActive UltraLift, since it has a good amount of SPF in it. For this particular mom bag, I have Soap & Glory's Daily Youth. It goes on smooth and fits well in my bag, and the packaging is pretty darn cute. It also has a screw-cap much like toothpaste, meaning it's less likely to leak in your purse.
