With Easter right around the corner, you’re probably deciding how you can celebrate safely, keeping health regulations in mind while still making it memorable.
Whether you’re celebrating Easter with the family members in your household or extending the invitation to other family members, friends, and neighbors, here are some fun, safe, and friendly ways to celebrate the Easter holiday.
Host a Virtual Easter Egg Hunt
We’ve had virtual school, virtual doctor appointments, and even virtual extracurricular activities, but can you really have a virtual Easter egg hunt? You surely can, and recreating this staple Easter activity so family and friends near and far can enjoy just might be at the top of your list.
Collaborate with the other adults on the details of the hunt to ensure everyone has a similar experience.
Here are some details to discuss:
- Theme: Do you want the eggs or the treats to follow a similar theme?
- Treats: Will the treats be food or nonfood items?
- Number of eggs: How many eggs will be put out for the kids?
- Space: It’s best if the egg hunt occurs in a similar area in each household.
- Hiding spots: Where will the eggs be hidden? Agree on specific spaces where everyone’s eggs are hidden in each household. For example, behind the couch pillow, in the refrigerator behind the milk, on the front porch in the corner.
- Special egg: To add a little extra fun, have one special egg with the child’s name on it and a super-special treat. When the child finds their special egg, they get to celebrate and show it to the group.
On the day of the hunt, set up the tech for the event and get started. Identify who will read the clues to help the hunters find the eggs, and at the end, tally up how many eggs everyone has and determine a winner.
Decorate Easter Eggs
Decorating Easter eggs is another fun and creative activity to consider doing this year.
You can choose to decorate real eggs or opt for craft eggs made of foam or other materials. You can also decorate the eggs by dying them or using simple art supplies like markers, crayons, and paints.
Depending on where you shop, you should be able to find ready-made egg decorating kits, so check out your local Walmart, Target, Amazon, or craft store if you prefer to keep it simple.
Want to include other friends and family? Decorate eggs outside and set up tables that allow for social distancing, or you can do it virtually to share in the activities from afar.
Play Easter Games
Easter is the perfect time to whip out some creative games for the whole family.
Here are five fun ones to consider:
- Bunny hop race: Grab a few large sacks for race participants and do the bunny hop to the finish line. This is sure to bring about a few falls and lots of laughs.
- Easter egg toss: There are tons of ways to have an Easter egg toss. You can purchase inexpensive premade kits that have everything you need or DIY it. Grab a few stakes to go in the ground and small rings to toss onto the stakes, or hang a couple of different-sized hula hoops from a tree and throw Easter-themed items through the holes.
- Guess the number of jelly beans: Put jelly beans in a container and have everyone guess how many there are. The person with the closest estimate wins the entire container!
- Easter egg basketball: All you need for this game are plastic Easter eggs and a basket. Give each participant the same number of plastic eggs and see how many they can make in the basket in a given period. Whoever gets the most eggs in the basket wins that round.
- Egg and spoon race: Who doesn’t love an egg and spoon race? Give each racer a spoon with an egg on it, then see how fast they can race without the egg falling. You can hold the spoon in your hand or put the spoon handle in your mouth for an “eggs-tra” challenge.
Easter Treats and Movie Night
A movie night is always a good idea, and for Easter, that’s no different. You can opt for a simple movie night watching Easter movies like Ice Age: The Great Egg-Scapade, Rise of the Guardians, or Son of God, or you can choose non-Easter-themed movies. It’s up to you.
Make some yummy Easter treats to eat while watching:
- Peep s’mores: You make Peep s’mores just like regular s’mores. The only difference is you use Peeps instead of traditional marshmallows.
- Easter sugar cookies: Decorate tasty sugar cookies with an Easter theme like eggs, birds, bunnies, flowers, or carrots.
- Easter cupcakes: Just like sugar cookies, you can pull out all the stops to decorate your Easter-themed cupcakes.
- Chocolate nests: You can make easy and tasty chocolate bird nests using chocolate, chow mein noodles, and candy eggs.
