Olga Mendes was an experienced and dedicated professional working in the Victim's Support Unit of the Texas City 911 dispatch center. One day, she received a life-altering call that would change everything she thought she knew about her job.
Olga’s family had immigrated to Texas from Mexico when she was just a little girl, so she had always found herself acutely aware of the difficulties Latino people often face growing up in the United States.
She saw some of the major issues happening all over the country and that was one of the reasons why Olga decided to work in a career that was dedicated to helping others. Amid the hustle and bustle of a 24-hour operation, Olga’s role is to provide assistance and comfort to people in crisis.
It was a seemingly quiet night at work when Olga had the call come in that would greatly affect her. During that late-night call, on the other end of the phone was a young boy named Juan.
After Olga managed to calm Juan down a little, the 10-year-old told her that his mother and sisters were in grave danger and they needed someone to come and help them as soon as possible. Juan’s father had turned violent and he was afraid for their lives.

Due to the part of town that Juan was staying in with his family, he didn’t even have a real address to tell Olga. The 911 dispatcher started asking the distressed child if any defining details about his house would help the emergency crew find them. He told her that there was a single red rose in their window.
