Artist Creates A Shimmering World Of Light With Her Art Installation

Artist Soo Sunny Park's breathing installation “Unwoven Light” provided a beautiful animation of light to the extensive space that Rice Gallery in Houston had to offer. The final product was a shimmering, ethereal experience — one that looked almost otherworldly.

The glass tiles that Park used for her installation had an iridescent surface, which allows for spectrums of color to bounce and radiate off of it. The glass tiles are made of plexiglass that has a dichroic film that allows for this effect to take place.

All of these tiny rigid, yet beautiful, titles, once combined into one larger unit, can look quite serpentine and organic. Park created 37 units, each unit taking up to 87 hours to create. The installation was on view from April 11th to August 30th of 2013.

The tin links binding the glass together works well for subtly dividing space. Being that small gauge wires are used, when you really focus in and look at how the unit flows together, you’ll notice that there’s a gentle boundary that divides the space.

Parks believes that creating artwork is accepting the separation between the physical reality and the ideal reality, and then maybe meeting it halfway.

I think her sculpture portrays that sentiment quite perfectly, don’t you?
