Fred Vautour works the overnight shift as a janitor at Boston College, one of the most prestigious colleges in the country. It's no secret in the United States that private colleges are expensive; they can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and often leave students and parents in considerable debt. Thus, the majority of college students are often the wealthy.
Vantour began the custodial job decades ago and it was then that he realized there was a loophole that the college probably didn't expect their janitor to bank on. Every employee's children at the university can attend for free. All they have to do is get in, which is no small feat. But in 1998, Vantour's oldest daughter Amy got in and she went for free.
"She broke down crying, and I broke down crying, and we hugged each other. And there's pictures in my house of that," Vantour told CBS. "Me and my wife struggled through a lot of years, but seeing that made it all worthwhile."
That wasn't the only miracle. Soon after his son applied and was accepted. Then his other son. Then all five of Vantour's kids applied to Boston College, were accepted, and went for free. Over the years, Vantour got about $700,000 worth of free tuition. Vantour believes his kids are all smarter than him now, but here's the thing, there's no way they could have gotten accepted to that fancy college if they didn't have the parents to prepare them for it!
"You live for your kids, so they could have a better life than I had," Vantour said. And he gave them just that. What more could a parent want?
