10 Movies That Somehow Predicted The Future

We tend to laugh at anyone who tells us they can predict the future, but when we see movies set years ahead of the present, it can be tempting to wonder just how accurate they'll be in a few years' time. It might seem overly optimistic to daydream about all the crazy technology that a lot of sci-fi movies depict, but when you look at older films, you'll see that a lot of the "futuristic" gadgets they use are now a normal part of our daily lives!

While most of us indulge in fortune tellers and astrology purely for entertainment purposes, there have been some strange instances in which people (and animals) seemed to know what would really happen in the future. This odd cat has predicted the deaths of over 50 patients in one nursing home, and no one can figure out exactly how he does it! Of course, not all predictions are on-point — this video guessing what fashion might look like in the year 2000 had pretty mixed results, but with how quickly trends change, it might be completely accurate in a few short years!

Have you seen any of these movies that predict the future? This list compiled by Alltime 10s shows some of the eerily accurate predictions that some films have made, both intentionally and unintentionally. The technology-oriented ones are crazy enough, but what happened in number 3 actually sent chills down my spine! Don't forget to watch the video for clips from the movies and some honorable mentions!

Back in 1998, we weren't yet being bombarded with Kardashians or many other reality personalities. The plot of The Truman Show, however, was way ahead of its time in depicting the life of a man whose every move was watched by an entertained audience.

A young Matthew Broderick starred as a young hacker in this 1983 film. At the time, the idea of being able to start a war using a computer sounded absurd, but these days, it's fairly common to hear about major security breaches in government technology.

8. Videodrome

This 1983 film stars James Woods and focuses around a television station that broadcasts plotless torture clips to the masses. These days, you only need to know how to use a basic internet search engine to find such atrocities.

7. Americathon

Back when this film was released in 1979, it seemed outlandish that the USSR would collapse and China would become a global superpower. Today, it's just part of our daily reality.

6. Wag the Dog

This 1997 movie shows what lengths a politician might go to in order to cover up a sex scandal. It sounded crazy for about a year… right up until Bill Clinton's own sex scandal made headlines and was promptly overshadowed by the U.S. bombing of Afghanistan three days after he admitted guilt.

5. Game of Death

Bruce Lee died during the time this film was being produced, which makes the title a bit creepy as it is. But even more haunting is that the plot of the film involves Lee's character being shot on set and faking his own death. Years later, the actor's son Brandon would actually die after being accidentally shot during the making of the movie The Crow.

4. Enemy of the State

1998 was well before Edward Snowden blew the whistle on the NSA's spying on U.S. citizens, but this Will Smith movie ended up predicting just how much the organization would eventually be able to learn about our lives.

3. Super Mario Bros.

This 1993 movie wasn't exactly Oscar material, but the end of it shows a now-eerie moment of the Twin Towers disintegrating as a plane flies behind them. Given what would happen to those buildings less than a decade later, this goofy film has now taken on a sad and creepy vibe.

2. 2001: A Space Odyssey

The creators of this 1968 sci-fi flick were pretty confident that all the technology in the film would appear in real life by the time the new millennium rolled around, and their predictions were pretty close. We now have much of the high-tech features shown in this movie, including smartphones and the Siri-like robot voice that can talk to the characters.

1. Back to the Future Part II

When this film was released in 1989, things like flat-screen TVs and video calling were unheard of in the real world. Now, it's hard to imagine a world without programs such as Skype! If only we could finally get those real hoverboards this movie figured we'd have by now.
