Dementia is such a brutal disease, both for the individuals who are fighting this neurodegenerative illness and also for their caretakers. But often, when you least expect it, something will happen that brings back that spark of happiness, if only for a moment.
Jean McGee was 82 years old and had been living alone for many years. Jean has a rare and aggressive form of Alzheimer’s disease that only affects less than 15% of those diagnosed.
The life of this former military widower from Ohio had been full and happy for many years. He met the love of his life, Tiffany, at 24 years old, and they ended up getting married. They had three beautiful children together.
However, when they were in their 70s, Tiffany died suddenly due to a fatal heart attack and with his three kids grown up and scattered around the country, the 82-year-old was completely on his own. His youngest daughter, Cathy, eventually came to live with him as she was divorced and didn’t want her dad to be alone.
Cathy started to notice that her father was having trouble remembering things and he even went out for a few walks around the neighborhood only to get lost. When Cathy realized that she needed to take her father in for some testing, he was finally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

After his diagnosis, Cathy started to spend more time at home with her father. She began to notice that just about every day at noon he would step outside on his porch and sit on a bench. She wasn’t sure why he’d taken up this habit, so she came out onto the porch with him one day.
